Centripetal Steps Up to the Plate as Boston Red Sox's Official Cyber Defender

By Greg Tavarez

The Boston Red Sox, founded in 1901, have seen it all – from the Bambino Curse to the Curse of the Bloody Sock. These days, the Red Sox are known for their passionate players and their uncanny ability to make a game exciting, even if it means giving fans heart attacks in the ninth inning. So, if you're looking for a team with a rich history, a passionate fanbase and a whole lot of drama, then the Red Sox are your team. Just don't blame them if your hair goes gray from all the stress.

On a more serious note, sports organizations are going gray, too; not from the performance of their players, though. In this instance, bad actors are increasingly looking to the sports industry in their quest for new targets. Why?

Simple, unfortunately: National sports teams, major and minor leagues, global sporting associations and entertainment venues possess valuable personal and business data. In fact, a recent study conducted by the National Cyber Security Centre found that 70% of sports organizations experience at least one cyberattack each year.

That is why the Boston Red Sox selected Centripetal, a cybersecurity firm specializing in intelligence-powered solutions, as a partner in a multi-year deal. This makes Centripetal the Red Sox’s Official Cyber Network Security Partner. Centripetal will deploy its CleanINTERNET solution at Fenway Park and Red Sox training facilities.

“Centripetal is honored to work closely with the Boston Red Sox to proactively mitigate cyber risk with our patented CleanINTERNET solution, so that they can focus on providing the best experience possible for their fans,” said Jonathan Rogers, Chief Operating Officer at Centripetal.

Centripetal is operationalizing a collection of threat intelligence, in real-time, to protect organizations from every known cyberthreat through its innovative patented technologies. The Centripetal team includes experts in intelligence, with a team comprised of cryptologists and security operators from the U.S. Intelligence and Defense community who have protected the most sensitive assets in the world.

CleanINTERNET leverages global threat intelligence and customizes its approach for the sports and entertainment industry. This ensures comprehensive cybersecurity protection for the Red Sox's data and information to maintain trust with fans, sponsors and the community.

CleanINTERNET also utilizes high-performance computing, proprietary software algorithms and skilled security analysts to offer a proactive defense strategy at a competitive cost. It prioritizes threat intelligence, shifting focus from reactive to preventative measures and enhancing security team efficiency.

“We understand the malicious nature of today’s cyber attackers, and we wanted to defend our network and data as proactively as possible,” said Brian Shield, Senior Vice President, Chief Technology Officer/Information Technology for the Boston Red Sox. “By mitigating cyber risks effectively, the Boston Red Sox and Fenway Park can focus on delivering exceptional sporting and entertainment experiences, events and fan engagement without the disruption caused by cyber incidents.”
