Going Beyond Traditional Services: Ahead of MSP Expo 2024, A Conversation with SalvageData Recovery

By Alex Passett

The managed services landscape is changing, readers. As methods for further securing and optimizing data practices morph steadily alongside bad actors’ efforts to turn technologies against businesses themselves, dedicated teams with the right tools and top experts are becoming more and more in demand for 2024 and beyond.

Such is the case with SalvageData Recovery and its team of seasoned data recovery specialists. SalvageData partners with MSPs to broaden their capabilities and boost their security and productivity, which is exactly what their representatives will be talking about at MSP Expo next week! (MSP Expo is part of the ITEXPO #TECHSUPERSHOW experience. Check out SalvageData in booth #756.)

Ahead of the show, we had the chance to speak with Bogdan Glushko, SalvageData Recovery’s CEO.

Here’s what Glushko had to say:

What recent news or innovations in your products or services would you like to share?

We have recently broadened our offerings to provide a full suite of certified data recovery, ransomware response, and cyber resilience services to help MSPs secure their clients. These new offerings include cloud/VM recovery, and complete incident response (including onsite forensic recovery and proactive cybersecurity assessments).

Describe your company's role in the MSP ecosystem and how your company supports MSPs?

SalvageData powers MSPs with certified expertise, proven ransomware response, and advanced data recovery across all systems. Our purpose-built enablement resources, transparent commissions, and dedicated account management allow MSPs to confidently resell our full stack of data security solutions.

What are the top 2-3 trends you are seeing in the MSP space and why they are important to MSPs?

It is impossible to ignore the steep and ongoing rise in ransomware attacks, as well as explosive data growth with IoT and the edge computing sprawl – the future of cybersecurity is intrinsically tied to constant monitoring and immediate response capabilities. Our reliable services will reinforce MSP reputation and client loyalty in these high-risk environments by providing an expert safety net and a fast-acting recovery strategy.

How are these trends impacting your business?

The rise of ransomware attacks is what pushed SalvageData to go beyond traditional data recovery services. We’ve put together a dedicated team within our sister-company Proven Data, which specializes in response and data recovery in ransomware incidents. Our dedicated team of reverse engineers creates specialized solutions to effectively respond to these attacks. Therefore, we effectively expanded our services from data recovery to digital forensics and cybersecurity.

How do your services/products integrate into the MSP landscape, creating symbiotic relationships rather than a mere vendor-client dynamic?

    Bogdan Glushko, SalvageData Recovery CEO

Every MSP will have a different growth strategy that serves them best; SalvageData is in the business of empowering our partners’ growth efforts. We’re not holding them back. This is why we work with four different partner programs that can easily be implemented into a business plan, and each with the potential to scale. We succeed when our partners succeed.

What emerging technologies (e.g., IoT, 5G, AI, generative AI, etc.) should MSPs be considering and incorporating into their service offerings to help their clients stay ahead in their respective industries?

It's imperative to stay at the forefront of technological innovation to provide our clients with cutting-edge solutions that drive their competitive advantage. Incorporating technologies such as IoT for enhanced connectivity and data insights, 5G for high-speed, low-latency networks, and AI and generative AI for advanced analytics, automation, and personalized services, is all very much key.

Additionally, so is focusing on robust cybersecurity solutions to safeguard against evolving threats, alongside leveraging cloud and edge computing for scalable and efficient infrastructure. These will ensure our clients' operations are agile and secure.

By embracing these emerging technologies, we empower our clients to navigate the complexities of their industries, optimize their operations, and unlock new opportunities for growth and innovation.

The technology landscape and business needs are constantly evolving. How does your company's strategy actively encourage MSPs to embrace change and turn it into a strategic advantage?

SalvageData actively supports MSPs in navigating the ever-evolving technology landscape by providing continuous education on the latest cybersecurity threats, access to innovative data recovery and ransomware mitigation tools, and through our fostering of truly collaborative partnerships. We offer customizable service models and share real-time threat intelligence, enabling MSPs to proactively safeguard their clients. We also assist with regulatory compliance and promote a community of peers for shared learning and networking. Through these strategies, we empower MSPs to turn change into a strategic advantage, ensuring they remain at the forefront of delivering superior value in digital forensics and incident response services.

What key challenges do MSPs commonly face and how are you helping solve them?

We mitigate talent/capability gaps through comprehensive onboarding and certification. SLAs as low as two hours for ransomware response take staffing/scaling challenges off the table. (And ironclad security protocols ease compliance burdens.)

What sets your solution apart from competitors in the market?

Our 20-year track record, ISO-certified processes, and manufacturer authorizations underscore our unmatched experience – no data loss is too complex or system too sophisticated. Further, we guarantee our ransomware removal at a 90% success rate.

Please share a success story or two about how your strategies helped MSPs navigate the growth minefield, turning challenges into opportunities.

One example that illustrates the value we provide is our recent work with a large banking institution that fell victim to a cyberattack involving encryption of crucial data and a multi-million dollar ransom demand. Still reeling, they enlisted the services of SalvageData’s sister-company, Proven Data. Our cybersecurity experts’ unique levels of expertise allowed them to negotiate the ransom down and prevent future incidents through comprehensive vulnerability assessments and remediation guidance. Over just 14 days, we empowered them to neutralize the active threat, begin recovery, and implement strategic solutions to safeguard systems long-term. Now, we provide ongoing assessments and planning as a trusted partner committed to equipping clients with intelligence and frameworks to thrive in complex threat landscapes. This case underscores our ability to provide complete response solutions while positioning partners to continually mature their security postures.

How do you see the MSP industry evolving in the next several years and how is your company preparing for these changes?

We anticipate exponential IoT and edge computing growth, continued ransomware prevention adaptations, and data infrastructure disruption from quantum and next-generation storage tech. We are investing in R&D and partnerships in all these areas to ensure MSP relevance, too.

What technological changes/evolution do you expect to see in the coming year and how will those changes impact your business and/or the MSP market?

In the coming year, we anticipate significant advancements in AI and machine learning, further proliferation of IoT devices, and widespread adoption of 5G networks. These technological evolutions will drive a greater need for advanced cybersecurity measures, as the expanded attack surface and sophistication of threats increase. For our business and the MSP market at large, this will necessitate a shift towards more proactive, AI-driven security strategies, enhanced network and device management services, and the integration of next-gen connectivity solutions. The ability to harness these technologies effectively will be critical in delivering value-added services, ensuring operational resilience, and fostering innovation for our clients. As a result, staying ahead of these trends and continuously evolving our offerings will be paramount in maintaining competitive advantage and meeting the dynamic needs of the markets we serve.

What are you most looking forward to at MSP Expo 2024?

Although we’re not speaking at MSP Expo, we welcome the opportunities for others to explore our comprehensive ransomware, cyber resilience, and certified recovery toolkits that are purpose-built to help MSPs secure client loyalty and boost their bottom lines.
