Dell Named an IT Asset Disposition Leader in Gartner Magic Quadrant Report

By Laura Stotler

Dell has made the grade when it comes to IT asset disposition. The company was named a leader in Gartner’s Magic Quadrant for IT Asset Disposition (ITAD), Worldwide. The company joins a number of big names heading up the ITAD market, including HP, IBM, Arrow Electronics and Sims Recycling Solutions.

Gartner evaluates companies’ handling of ITAD based on core disposition services, acquisition services of used or secondary equipment from ITAD vendors and partners, and ancillary services. This category covers full-service ITAD vendors and service providers offering a variety of disposition solutions.

Dell’s services in the space include the handling of a full range of IT hardware, from desktop and notebook PCs to printers, servers, storage and networking products. Dell’s Asset Resale and Recycling services also cover the handling of tablets and smartphones in a limited capacity.

"Our approach is simple and wholly focused on our customers," said Doug Schmitt, VP and GM of Dell Global Support and Deployment. "We are proud of our asset-lifecycle management offerings, how we continue to act in the best interests of our customers as they consider cycling their bank of IT hardware assets, and the work we do with the community at large. Asset resale and recycling is an integral part of that strategy and one of the central pillars of the 2020 Legacy of Good plan - Dell's long-term vision for integrating business and sustainability."

According to Gartner, the global ITAD industry is undergoing a major transformation based on shifting compliance requirements for both data security and environmental recycling. Disposition of mobile devices is facing unprecedented demand in line with mobility trends, just as demand for traditional desktop and laptop recycling has slowed. A growing number of smart devices are expected to disrupt the matter further, according to Gartner, creating both challenges and opportunities for major enterprises like Dell, as well as ITAD service providers.

“The characteristic common to all vendors in this Magic Quadrant is the ability to meet the demanding requirements of the two critical categories of ITAD risk: data security and environmentally sound recycling,” states the report. “ITAD service providers have become an important link in the overall life cycle management of IT equipment. Indeed, the number and complexity of legislative mandates — often country or region-specific — for the secure and environmentally friendly disposal of IT equipment continue to grow rapidly, and the consequences of noncompliance are quickly attracting board-level attention.”
