TD SYNNEX's Apptium Acquisition a Win for MSPs.

By Erik Linask

In an increasingly cloud-centric world, where software, infrastructure, and virtually everything-as-a-service (XaaS) dominate the IT landscape, distributors like TD SYNNEX are evolving rapidly to strengthen and support their vast ecosystem of partners.  Recognizing the challenges associated with orchestrating these diverse offerings, TD SYNNEX announced a key strategic move, acquiring Apptium, a software development company known for its sophisticated cloud commerce platform.  The move is designed to accelerate TD SYNNEX's digital business orchestration strategy and enhance its flagship StreamOne platform.

The shift to subscription and consumption-based IT models, encompassing Software-as-a-Service (SaaS), Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS), and other XaaS capabilities, has introduced both immense opportunity and considerable complexity for MSPs, creating increasingly complex and interconnected IT environments.  Navigating disparate vendor portals, managing diverse billing cycles, and aggregating multiple cloud solutions into a cohesive client offering can be a time-consuming and resource-intensive endeavor.  TD SYNNEX’s acquisition of Apptium should directly address these pain points.

With Apptium, TD SYNNEX gains a platform-as-a-service (PaaS) solution that has already served as a key enabling technology for StreamOne.  StreamOne is TD SYNNEX’s digital platform, which underpins the company's digital business orchestration strategy.  Essentially, it's designed to be the central hub where TD SYNNEX's vast ecosystem of partners – including MSPs, resellers, and system integrators – can manage and expand their technology offerings, particularly helpful in the context of a growing cloud and XaaS  landscape.

At its core, Apptium’s platform simplifies the adoption and implementation of digital marketplaces.  Its distinctive “configuration over code” philosophy allows for rapid deployment and easy management, accelerating time to revenue for its users.  The platform's API-driven approach ensures real-time data accuracy and provides a crucial single-pane-of-glass view for managing seamless transactions across all major hyperscalers and disparate subscription types.

Beyond its  role in StreamOne, Apptium also boasts extensive products, integrations, and functionalities, including a billing and subscription management platform specifically designed to handle the intricacies of consumption-based IT service models.  Its expertise spans marketplace on-boarding, multi-cloud support, catalog management, fulfillment orchestration, and advanced analytics – all of which will benefit TD SYNNEX and its partners as they seek to deliver and manage IT services for businesses.

For MSPs, the customer environment is inherently much more complex than other TD SYNNEX partners, because they are not only selling services, but managing them on a day-to-day basis as well.  This acquisition could be a game-changer, delivering efficiencies that help MSPs thrive in an subscription-based economy:

Accelerated time to revenue:  Apptium's platform enables MSPs to swiftly launch and monetize new cloud and XaaS offerings.  By reducing the friction and complexity that often accompany setting up and integrating new services, MSPs can bring solutions to market faster, translating into quicker profitability.

Simplified portfolio management:  MSPs are tasked with managing client solutions that often span multiple cloud providers and include multiple subscription types.  Apptium’s single-pane-of-glass and billing and subscription management capabilities simplify this operational headache.  With it, MSPs can oversee and bill for services from a unified platform, regardless of the underlying vendor.

Modernized service offerings:  With Apptium's capabilities, TD SYNNEX partners can more easily integrate and offer cutting-edge services, including emerging technologies like agentic AI, alongside traditional SaaS, IaaS, and other XaaS solutions. This enables MSPs to stay competitive and cater to the evolving demands of their clients.

Enhanced digital innovation and delivery:  The combined intellectual property and expertise mean MSPs will benefit from improved tools for digital service innovation.  They can be more agile in creating tailored solutions and delivering them efficiently, leading to stronger client satisfaction and loyalty.  Larger and growing MSPs with diverse customer bases – or those looking to expand into markets – can even set up and manage their own cloud marketplaces.

Streamlined operations and support:  The TD SYNNEX/Apptium combination is set to create more cohesive experiences for MSPs in solution aggregation, vendor management, and support.  This operational streamlining allows MSPs to focus more on strategic client engagement and growth rather than administrative workloads.

“Rick Kapani and his team have built a transformative platform that has already delivered a meaningful impact underpinning our own solutions orchestration capabilities. Bringing this technical expertise to TD SYNNEX allows us to execute on our strategy and continue investments in serving our customers as well as the incoming customers of Apptium. Through this platform we will strengthen support for our ecosystem partners and expand our addressable market over the next several years.”

Apptium, founded in 2014, will continue to operate as a separate, wholly owned subsidiary.   Apptium founder Kapani will continue to lead the business as General Manager and Senior Vice President, reporting to TD SYNNEX’s Chief Strategy and Technology Officer Sergio Farache.  This allows both Apptium and TD SYNNEX to leverage each others technology and brand value, while creating new revenue opportunities for both through a more agile, integrated, and comprehensive platform to navigate the future of technology delivery.
