Actuate Now BIRT Certified on Cloudera Impala

By Michael Guta

In today's business environment, any company with an Internet connection can start gathering data about its customers with minimal investment. Using social media, websites and survey applications, a business can get a rough understanding of the needs of its customers.

While a very small amount of data can be analyzed without much help, it is a different animal altogether when the data becomes so massive it is classified as big data. This is a problem generally reserved for large organizations and processing this information requires the right analytics tools. Actuate Corporation, a business intelligence and reporting tools (BIRT) company, announced that its suite of development and deployment software is certified on Cloudera Impala, an open source massively parallel processing (MPP) query engine that runs natively on Apache Hadoop.

Through customer developed BIRT-based visualization, predictive analytics, and customer communication management solutions, Actuate is able to deliver personalized analytics and insights. Integrating Cloudera Impala will allow the company to use its open source powered platform to provide scalability, security, access, analysis and data organization no matter how big it is from virtually any source.

"With Actuate and Cloudera Impala combined, scale truly meets scale. Users can finally benefit from unprecedented scalability of the data itself, as well as matching scalability in the delivery of personalized analytics to customers, partners and employees. The result is speed of thought insight that drives profitability and brand loyalty," said Jeff Morris, vice president of product marketing for Actuate.

Impala is an Apache licensed projects that provides organizations database technology to issue low-latency SQL queries for data that is stored in Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) and Apache HBase without data movement or transformation. Impala can use the same framework as MapReduce, Apache Hive, Apache Pig and other components of the Hadoop stack by leveraging flexible file and data formats, metadata, security, and resource management because it is integrated from the ground up as part of the Hadoop ecosystem.

This collaboration will give organizations and developers the ability to provide critical business insight on any data from Hadoop by creating interactive visualizations for analysis.

Some of the key features of Impala include:

  • SQL queries on CDH in seconds
  • Native MPP query engine
  • Integration with leading BI tools
  • Support for a wide variety of file formats including text, SequenceFiles, Avro, RCFile, LZO and Parquet
  • Leverages metadata, ODBC driver, SQL syntax and Beeswax GUI (in Hue) from Apache Hive

"Cloudera Impala helps enterprise customers realize value out of Big Data faster than ever and we’re committed to helping enterprises achieve the most from their Big Data initiatives. With Actuate’s recent certification of their BIRT-based suite on Impala, Apache Hadoop technology buyers can trust that they will gain clear value since the software has been tested and validated to work with CDH, our 100% open source and enterprise-ready distribution of Apache Hadoop," said Tim Stevens, vice president of corporate and business development for Cloudera.
