KnowBe4 Unveils AI-Driven Email Security for SMBs

By Erik Linask

In the constantly evolving cybersecurity landscape, human error remains a significant vulnerability.  Of course, external threats constantly become more sophisticated, but statistics show that the "human element" is implicated in a vast majority of data breaches – reports cite figures ranging from 74-95% of incidents.  One of the most common is outbound email, where employees, through simple mistakes or subtle malicious intent, inadvertently expose sensitive information, attach incorrect files, or transmit confidential data to unintended recipients.

The consequences of outbound email data breaches for SMBs can be devastating.  Beyond the immediate operational disruption, these incidents frequently lead to severe financial penalties from regulatory bodies (like those stemming from GDPR or CCPA violations), significant financial losses averaging hundreds of thousands of dollars per incident, and irreparable damage to reputation and customer trust.  Traditional Data Loss Prevention solutions, often reliant on static, rule-based policies, can’t keep pace with the dynamic nature of modern communications.  They typically lack the contextual understanding of user behavior and the real-time visibility needed to effectively prevent breaches before they occur, frequently generating an overwhelming volume of false positives that lead to "alert fatigue" among security teams.

Recognizing this challenge, KnowBe4 announced the release of KnowBe4 Prevent across all market segments, specifically tailoring its AI-driven capabilities to meet the needs of SMBs.

KnowBe4 Prevent is an AI-native outbound email security product that utilizes advanced machine learning, neural networks, and sophisticated behavioral analytics to provide email protection.  Unlike reactive, rule-bound systems, Prevent proactively analyzes outgoing emails and attachments, alerting employees in real-time when they are about to make a risky decision – effectively stopping a potential breach at its source.

The solution is engineered to detect and mitigate a comprehensive spectrum of outbound email security threats, including:

  • Misdirected emails to incorrect recipients, a common error often exacerbated by autocomplete functions,
  • Unauthorized sharing of sensitive information, whether accidental or intentional,
  • Replies to suspicious emails and newly registered domains, indicating potential phishing or business email compromise follow-ups,
  • Data exfiltration attempts by malicious insiders or compromised accounts, and
  • Misattached files, including the detection of hidden data within attachments.

"Outbound email risk continues to be one of the most persistent and costly challenges an organization can face – one that requires smarter, more adaptive approaches to effectively address them,” said Greg Kras, chief product officer at KnowBe4.  “Prevent… allows organizations to stop incidents at the source, empower employees to make safer decisions, and enable security teams to manage and reduce risk at scale.”

Beyond real-time intervention, KnowBe4 Prevent offers security teams detailed reporting and analytics for a holistic view of outbound security risk across the organization, insights into user interactions with Prevent's prompts, and tangible quantification of prevented incidents.

As part of KnowBe4's comprehensive Human Risk Management platform, Prevent integrates seamlessly into a broader strategy that seeks to transform human vulnerability into an organization's strongest defense.  For SMBs, it offers the intelligence and proactive defense needed against the costly ramifications of email data breaches.
