SunGard and Partners Provide Savanna Energy Services with Cloud, Managed BDR

By Laura Stotler

Providing a true blend of managed IT, backup and disaster recovery (BDR) and cloud services, SunGard Availability Services has migrated the production data environment of Savanna Energy Services Corporation to its new data center in Calgary. The company has partnered with Allstream and NetApp to offer a full migration along with a complete BDR solution.

SunGard is providing the drilling, well servicing and oilfield rentals company with its NetBackup vaulting service along with the Service Recovery Manager solution. This eliminates tape backup for the company, including the associated costs for tape, backup servers and infrastructure, backup licenses, tape media and offsite tape storage.

The Service Recovery Manager service provides robust backup and turnkey recovery for 90 servers. SunGard is working in tandem with NetApp to offer full support for Managed Vaulting for NetApp as well as the Recover to Cloud for vCenter Site Recovery Manager (SRM). The Managed Vaulting from NetApp, a data and storage management provider, enables SunGard to assume responsibility for managing the protection, movement and recovery of critical application data.

SunGard is also working with Allstream, a Canadian communications provider, to deliver the full-service solution to Savanna. The company resells SunGard’s line of Managed Services and Recovery Services offerings. Another benefit of the partnership approach is that SunGard can offer the services and infrastructure through an affordable, utility-based pricing model.

“Our IT needs have changed dramatically in the last few years, and tape backup is no longer the right solution for us,” said Jim Clarke, manager, Global Infrastructure, Savanna Energy Services Corp. “We needed a full disaster recovery solution, as well as a network connection for all our people.”
