MSPs today don’t just manage on-premises gear and applications or cloud services. Many times they must do both concurrently, as when customers have hybrid clouds.
ScienceLogic, an IT service provider, is pitching a solution for MSPs that support hybrid clouds using Amazon Web Services (AWS) and VMware’s vCloud Director, a popular tool for supporting private clouds.
The company’s Smart IT Platform now has “smart monitoring policies that are highly automated for Amazon Web Services (AWS) and VMware vCloud Director,” the company said.
Hybrid clouds are a growth area for a number of reasons. Many shops want to maintain control of their computing, but want the elasticity and utility-style approach clouds offer, so they build a private cloud. But in order to be elastic, you need excess capacity.
Instead of having a bunch of unused server resources in the data center, these shops, when needed, will “burst” to the cloud, using a provider’s capacity.
In other cases, mission-critical applications are kept in-house, while related work is held in the cloud – and the two systems work together as if they reside in the same location.
ScienceLogic believes it can help MSPs manage both scenarios. “To support today’s dynamic infrastructure with ‘compute anywhere’ requirements, ScienceLogic service management views seamlessly show service levels, health, availability, and risk regardless of where individual service delivery resources (e.g., storage, database, web servers, etc.) reside – in the data center or in the cloud,” a company spokesman said. “Designed to support multi-tenant operations for service providers or enterprises, ScienceLogic Smart IT software provides an ultra-flexible and unified monitoring and management platform for hybrid cloud and converged compute environments.”
“Hundreds of ScienceLogic Power-Packs work out-of-the-box to collect data from any computing source and present actionable information in context that drive Smart IT policies,” the official added.
Customer Win
ScienceLogic began a decade again when a bunch of IT pros with experience in operations management for service providers and telcos decided to build a management tool that was easier to use.
ScienceLogic recently landed a deal with data center company Equinix, Inc. where Smart IT will provide visibility into the data center infrastructure, or offer proactive management that includes a service level view.
“We had several key requirements for an IT infrastructure management platform, including single pane of glass monitoring of our information assets, visibility into our infrastructure that is tied into alerting and ticket management, and of course a system that was easy to deploy and easy to use,” said Steve Upp, Director of Server Operations at Equinix at the time of the announcement. “We previously had monitoring from different solutions that never completely met all of our needs. You can’t operate as a knowledge-aware IT organization without knowing what’s going on throughout your global IT infrastructure.”
“The ScienceLogic platform does all the heavy lifting and really works out-of-the-box, allowing us to be more proactive and service-oriented,” he said.
