NetApp and VMware Team Up on Integrated Virtual Storage Infrastructure for Cloud Environments

NetApp and VMware have announced several new solutions and technology integrations designed to bring together NetApp's clustered Data ONTAP operating system with VMware's vCloud and Horizon Suites.

The integrated cloud infrastructure and mobile computing offerings will enable tighter data protection, easier deployment of infrastructure and nonstop IT operations.

The new offerings include the NetApp Storage Solution for VMware vCloud Suite, as well as the NetApp Storage Solution for VMware Horizon Suite.

The vCloud Suite solution is geared toward service providers and enterprises alike, enabling them to deliver a shared storage infrastructure within private cloud environments. The Horizon Suite offering facilitates remote/mobile workers, providing anywhere, anytime access to secure desktops, applications and data sharing.

The NetApp Storage Solution for VMware vCloud Suite offers storage infrastructure for private cloud environments by virtualizing physical storage hardware. This enables storage administrators to increase or decrease their storage resources on demand and without disrupting their business. It is built on the clustered Data ONTAP OS, offering storage efficiency and embedded data protection.

This helps reduce overall infrastructure costs while aiding with increased availability and accelerated time to market.

The NetApp Storage Solution for VMware Horizon Suite provides storage efficiency as well as data protection integration with VMware Horizon View 5.2 and VMware Horizon Workspace 1.0. This lets desktop and user data store securely and remain backed up on a virtualized infrastructure built on clustered Data ONTAP. Customers may also use the NetApp FlexClone technology through the solution, for the rapid deployment of virtual desktops as well as improved scalability and the simplified management of end-user computing environments.

"NetApp and VMware continue to deliver solutions that enable organizations to take advantage of shared storage in a software-defined data center," said Brendon Howe, vice president, product and solutions marketing, NetApp. "Our mutual customers can build on clustered Data ONTAP, and the deep integrations with the VMware vCloud Suite and VMware Horizon Suite, to provide dynamic, scalable, on-demand services, without compromising security or reliability. Our partnership continues a tradition of shared innovation and integration, resulting in flexible and affordable technology transitions for our customers."

"Deep collaboration with our strategic partners, such as NetApp, enables us to deliver on our software-defined datacenter vision," said Toni Adams, vice president, global partner and alliances marketing, VMware. "NetApp Clustered Data ONTAP with VMware vCloud Suite and VMware Horizon Suite enables our joint customers to optimize their IT infrastructure while helping them improve operational efficiency. By continuing to partner closely with NetApp, we will continue to create simple, scalable, and secure solutions for organizations of all sizes."
