NAKIVO Thrusts into Backup and Replication Market

By Jody Ray Bennett

Data protection and backup software company NAKIVO Inc. announced the general availability of NAKIVO Backup & Replication v2.0 Free Edition, a software tool which enables the backup, storage and recovery of running virtual machines for operational, archival and portability purposes.

Users can make ad hoc backups of running VMs with this product - whether locally, remotely over WAN, or to Dropbox cloud storage - and are provided with constant monitoring of protected infrastructure and VMs, with infrastructural errors or changes notified via e-mail. After significant market surveys and research, companies like NAKIVO are attempting to gain additional business where customers have a unique demand.

A Web 2.0 UI and job grouping feature lends additional functionality to an already-intuitive piece of software and its automatic deduplication compression method significantly reduces both storage space utilization and recovery time. The Free Edition’s replication feature allows users to copy and migrate VMs between hosts, and even standalone hosts or those managed by a different vCenter, as well as between storage devices.

According to a statement, NAKIVO’s Free Edition stays current with the latest vSphere technology (including 5.1) and is compatible with both Windows 8 and Windows 2012 Server. As it is storage agnostic, the product is compatible with VMware 4.1 or higher and with any VMware-supported storage. The company hopes this type of technology will help grow the business in coming years.

One report noted that “NAKIVO Backup & Replication Free Edition is available now at no cost and with no limitations on the number of hosts and VMs. Upgrading to the full version of NAKIVO Backup & Replication is as easy as replacing the license file.” 2013 will be an interesting year for Naviko, as well as its competitors and the shape of this industry overall.
