
Network operations teams face a persistent imbalance. Enterprise networks are becoming more distributed, interconnected, and business-critical, while the expertise required to troubleshoot them remains concentrated among a relatively small number of truly experienced engineers.
The people physically standing in wiring closets, data centers, branch offices, retail locations, and customer sites are often not the people with decades of troubleshooting experience. They may be capable field technicians or junior engineers, but they have not yet developed the pattern recognition that allows a veteran to look at a test result, understand its context, and quickly identify the likely cause.
That gap creates an expensive cycle. A technician identifies an anomaly but lacks the confidence or experience to act on it. The issue is escalated to a senior engineer or centralized network operations team. Resolution slows while the technician waits for guidance, and a second visit may be required if the problem cannot be fixed during the initial visit.
For MSPs, this is more than an inconvenience. Every escalation consumes more and higher-cost engineering resources. Every repeat truck roll cuts into margins. Every prolonged outage creates additional pressure on service-level commitments and customer relationships.
Putting Troubleshooting Guidance at the Point of Work
NetAlly is attempting to address that problem with Ally Intelligence, a new service included with active AllyCare Pro support subscriptions across much of its handheld network testing portfolio. The key is it does more than help technicians collect better diagnostic information — it helps them interpret that information and determine what to do next.
Traditionally, field troubleshooting has involved two distinct steps. A technician runs tests and collects results, and then someone with greater expertise interprets those results and recommends a course of action.
Ally Intelligence brings those steps closer together. After a tech runs an EZ test, the system helps determine whether the network is operating properly or whether an issue requires attention. When a problem is detected, the tester provides contextual, step-by-step guidance intended to help the technician address it immediately at the site.
If the network is found to be healthy, the tester can document that result, allowing the team to eliminate the network as the source of the problem and continue investigating elsewhere. That outcome also has operational value, since proving that the network is functioning normally can prevent unnecessary escalation and reduce the time spent troubleshooting in the wrong places.

Ally Intelligence is an expert system built on three decades of troubleshooting experience and millions of network tests conducted by NetAlly devices. The company is also distinguishing it from a general-purpose generative AI assistant — there are no token-based usage charges and the guidance is derived from known network conditions and established troubleshooting practices.
That consistency and repeatability benefit technicians working on live customer networks ny providing clear guidance grounded in the test results, rather than a range of theoretically possible answers.
Why the MSP Opportunity Is Larger Than Faster Troubleshooting
For MSPs, the immediate benefits are straightforward: Fewer escalations, shorter resolution times, fewer repeat visits, and less dependence on senior engineers for routine problems.
The bigger picture is about greater operational consistency.
MSPs frequently support dozens or hundreds of customer environments with different equipment, configurations, locations, and business requirements. Delivering uniform service across those environments can be difficult when troubleshooting outcomes depend heavily on individual technicians.
Embedding guidance in the testing device can help narrow that variation. While a veteran engineer and a less experienced technician may not approach a problem with the same background knowledge, they can be guided through a consistent diagnostic process to reach the same result. That can improve first-visit resolution and make service quality less dependent on individual techs and create consistency across the MSP.
It could also help MSPs expand their technical teams more efficiently. Hiring an entry-level technician is one thing, but making that technician productive across a diverse customer base is another. Certainly, guided troubleshooting doesn’t eliminate the need for training or experienced engineers, but it can provide an additional layer of support while newer employees build practical experience.
MSPs are trying to grow recurring revenue without allowing labor costs to rise at the same rate. A service provider that can resolve more incidents with its existing field team can improve technician usage, protect contract margins, and reserve senior engineering capacity for projects that genuinely require their expertise.
At the same time, clients may never know that a diagnostic system helped guide the technician — and they don’t need to. But, they will notice whether the problem was solved during the first visit and whether downtime was kept to a minimum.
Another potentially valuable benefit is that NetAlly paired its Ally Intelligence introduction with an expansion of its network discovery capabilities. Nmap-based discovery and Discovery Monitoring, previously limited to CyberScope, are being extended to its EtherScope nXG, AirCheck G3, and LinkRunner AT 4000 products (for customers with active AllyCare subscriptions).
What this does is allow technicians to identify connected devices, open ports, and changes in the network environment. For MSPs, that can add useful security and asset visibility to an ordinary troubleshooting visit. A technician dispatched to investigate a connectivity problem may also identify an unauthorized device, an unexpected service, or a network change that warrants further investigation.
To be clear, it does not turn every field technician into a security analyst, but it does help MSPs collect more useful information from the tools they are already using and identify anomalies before they become larger issues. There may also me opportunities to connect routine network support with broader asset management, security assessment, or network monitoring services to create additional revenue streams, in addition to stronger margins, scalable service delivery, and better and faster resolution.
