Interoperability (a.k.a. the ability of different systems and technologies to work together seamlessly) has often been a thorn in the side of the tech industry. While the dream of a harmonious digital ecosystem where devices and services from various vendors play nicely together does persist, the reality is far more complex.
For example, one particularly tricky area is service chaining, where multiple network functions are linked together to deliver a specific service. When these functions come from different vendors, the potential for compatibility issues skyrockets.
The root of the problem lies in the diversity of protocols, APIs and data formats used by different vendors. What one vendor considers standard might be a foreign language to another. This lack of standardization creates a patchwork quilt of incompatible systems, which makes it difficult to chain services together without significant effort and customization.
Luckily, the industry recognizes this challenge and is actively working toward solutions.
Recently, GTT Communications, a networking and security-as-a-service provider for multinational organizations, announced the virtualization of its Managed Dedicated Internet Access (DIA) service. This is enabled through the GTT Envision platform, which connects, orchestrates, virtualizes and automates enterprise networks. Managed DIA joins Managed SD-WAN and Managed Firewall in the suite of virtualized functions GTT offers as service-chained capabilities via its EnvisionEDGE customer premise devices.
GTT’s Managed DIA service offers businesses a reliable and cost-effective way to connect to the internet. Unlike traditional internet connections, GTT’s solution provides flexible, on-demand bandwidth allocation to allow businesses to easily scale their internet usage as needed.
“Great, reliable internet service is critical for many businesses, supporting everything from truly differentiated end-customer experiences to reaching mission-critical cloud applications,” said Tom Major, Senior Vice President, Product Management and Technology, GTT.
With the GTT EnvisionDX digital gateway, businesses remotely deploy advanced services like SD-WAN and firewall protection directly to their EnvisionEDGE devices. This eliminates the need for expensive hardware upgrades and lengthy installations.
Additionally, GTT’s global network, EnvisionCORE, powers the delivery of Managed DIA services worldwide. With 25 sites across six continents, businesses will easily deploy EnvisionEDGE devices to their premises, regardless of location. This global reach and flexibility empower businesses to connect their operations seamlessly, no matter where they are.
“By virtualizing delivery of our global, high-quality Managed DIA services, we are enabling simple bandwidth optimization, greater segmentation flexibility and enhanced business resilience,” Major added. “Moreover, our DIA customers can seamlessly and securely transition from DIA to SD-WAN in minutes – while integrating a virtual managed firewall from another vendor on top – through our service chaining capability.”
GTT aims to simplify its customers' network infrastructure, both present and future. This latest development brings them closer to realizing that goal as it offers customers an efficient solution that reduces complexity and enhances network performance.
