ICYMI: News Around the MSP Space

By Greg Tavarez

The digital landscape unlocks a world of opportunity for growth and innovation. At the same time, it also exposes them to a constantly evolving array of security threats.

In recent years, cybercriminals have become increasingly sophisticated. They like to exploit vulnerabilities in remote access protocols and use compromised credentials to gain unauthorized access to sensitive data.

This alarming trend is putting immense pressure on security teams, who are often stretched thin due to the industry's persistent talent shortage. That is why organizations and security teams often turn to MSPs.

MSPs offer solutions to combat cyber threats. For example, TPx now offers a dark web monitoring service to enhance cybersecurity for businesses. Also, Adaptive Shield announced new features to boost SaaS security.

But that’s not all that has been going on around the MSP industry. So, let’s take a look:

Cybersecurity threats continue to evolve, with attackers increasingly exploiting remote access protocols and compromised credentials, according to a report by Sophos. The report found that remote desktop protocol (RDP) was used in 90% of attacks investigated by Sophos in the first half of 2024, the highest incidence since the company began tracking this data in 2020. Compromised credentials were the leading root cause of attacks, surpassing vulnerabilities for the first time in 2023.

Meanwhile, Veeam announced its acquisition of Coveware, a provider of cyber-extortion incident response solutions. This move strengthens Veeam's data protection and ransomware recovery offerings as businesses grapple with the growing threat of ransomware attacks. Coveware will continue to offer its incident response services and threat actor insights, which Veeam plans to integrate into its broader product portfolio.

Dropzone AI, a developer of AI security analysts, secured $16.85 million in Series A funding. Dropzone's AI technology aims to address the cybersecurity industry's talent shortage by automating security alert investigation tasks. By reducing the manual workload of security analysts, Dropzone allows them to focus on more complex threats.

Another area of technology with the potential to address cybersecurity challenges is AI. TD SYNNEX launched a program to help partners become IBM Watsonx Gold-tier partners, enabling them to offer AI solutions to businesses.

The program offers training, sales acceleration resources, and marketing support to help partners capitalize on the growing demand for AI solutions.

Finally, AppDirect acquired Builtfirst, a provider of self-service marketplace platform technology. This acquisition expands AppDirect's ability to help businesses of all sizes launch and manage their own online marketplaces, a trend expected to accelerate in the coming years.

Whether it’s a new solution being released, a new partnership or funding for a jumpstart into the market, MSPs are there to help organizations and security teams stay ahead of attackers by building a stable cybersecurity posture.
