Worried About Your SharePoint Data or Migration?

By Susan J. Campbell

When it comes to the management of your office information, Microsoft brings significant value. From word processing capabilities to spreadsheet management to optimizing your email communications. Most of us are familiar with the Office suite and how it makes our lives a little bit easier on a daily basis. To expand that benefit, a number of companies are also moving to SharePoint.

Another Microsoft product, SharePoint helps to keep data properly managed and protected once you no longer need to keep it solely on your PC. If you’re accustomed to saving documents and other data to a shared drive on the network, moving to SharePoint use won’t upset your workflow. What can be a challenge, however, is migrating everything on those drives to the SharePoint environment.

In the business environment where the migration has already taken place, the information stored in SharePoint is often highly important and sensitive. Access control mechanisms are sophisticated, yet can be challenging to analyze and evaluate. At the same time, access activity on SharePoint is rarely recorded or even tracked, which means important information may be accessible to people who should not have access to it. If these individuals do access the information, it could easily go undetected.

Fortunately, there are options to easing this process and protecting your information. Varonis offers DatAdvantage for SharePoint, which automates access control, as well as enumeration and analysis for SharePoint. It records all access activity and identifies the likely owner of the data. Likewise, the IDU Classification Framework provides additional intelligence on the content and combines this information with the context of access controls and activity.

If you’re still in the pre-migration stage and are unsure of your next step, Varonis also offers the Varonis Data Transport Engine. This tool relies on metadata to automate the migration of the unstructured data from file shares to the SharePoint servers. You can intelligently choose the data you want migrated based on the file type, use, sensitivity and other criteria. Once this process is complete, the Varonis Data Governance Suite provides the necessary automation to properly manage and protect content moving forward.

While Microsoft SharePoint delivers considerable value to the small business and the enterprise, it can be a difficult beast to master. If you need a better way to manage migration or the data you already store in SharePoint, it may be time to consider a provider who can help.
