What is the Significance of ISO 27001 Certification?

By Lavanya Rathnam

One of the biggest concerns of an IT system is security. Whether it is a network-based, cloud-based or even an internal system, the first area that potential customers look into is the security of the application. This importance has gone to heightened levels in recent years, thanks to sophisticated hackers who break into a system and steal confidential data. As a result, it has become imperative for every application provider to implement the highest standards of security and safety into their application. To help businesses understand the security aspects and to help them implement the same, the ISO 27001 standard was established.

This standard builds on the BS7799-2 standard that was established in the 1990s. As businesses and technologies became more advanced, there arose a need to include more aspects into the Information Security Management System (ISMS) and this is exactly what ISO 27001 contains. Companies that implement the procedures established in this standard get the ISO 27001 certification. This is the most stringent information security certification available today and it is given only to companies that have established controls in many areas of operations including security and risk management.

From a clients' perspective, a company that has ISO 27001 certification has the highest ISMS and this means, it can offer s system that is sure to be safe and secure. As a result, the client company will feel confident about the system and will be willing to either buy it or outsource its operations to the provider.

One such company that has obtained this certification is WHOA.com, a cloud service provider. This certification has put the company in a driver's seat in the world of cloud computing. It is hoped that many more such companies get the ISO 27001 certification to make cloud computing and the Internet a safer place for users.
