Managed Hosting Magic Quadrant Welcomes Datapipe

Managed Hosting Magic Quadrant Welcomes Datapipe

By Doug Barney

Gartner recently released its Magic Quadrant analysis of managed hosters, where the research house ranks companies on vision and leadership.

Datapipe didn’t quite make it into the top square but was right there on the edge, considered by Gartner to be a “challenger.”

AT&T, Rackspace, Savvis and Verizon Terremark all made the very top category.

The Jersey City MSP has a variety of ways it offers services, including Amazon Web Services (AWS), on private of public Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS), and on dedicated servers. The company also has colocation offerings.

Gartner’s narrative also looks at strengths and weaknesses. One strength is that Datapipe can help customers move to AWS, and those that want to use extra services surrounding AWS.

Pricing and billing is another plus. “Datapipe aims to deliver predictability in month-to-month billing for customers by not charging for time and materials for routine move, add and change requests that do not require new equipment — even to the point of performing a complete OS upgrade for a hosted server,” Gartner explained.

Gartner is also impressed with Datapipe’s green focus, using hydroelectric and geothermal power in an Iceland data center, and buying energy offsets for its U.S.-based data centers.

On the caution side, Datapipe can be more expensive, but this is due to deep levels of service.

But not all customers are right for Datapipe; “Organizations requiring mostly commodity services might find it harder to get Datapipe's attention as it shifts its focus to customers for which its high-touch service levels are a competitive differentiator,” Gartner said.

Datapipe believes it does have the magic touch. "Datapipe's global reach and managed hosting capabilities provide our clients with a trusted partner to plan, migrate and manage mission-critical IT applications," said Robb Allen, CEO at Datapipe. "Gartner's evaluation highlights our unique ability to deliver a world-class service experience to the enterprise market."
