From Productivity to Protection: Datalink Expands Microsoft 365 Security Oversight

By Erik Linask

As cyber threats evolve and compliance demands intensify, organizations, particularly in regulated sectors, like healthcare, education, legal, and others, companies are grappling with how to secure their digital environments without the cost or complexity of enterprise solutions.

At the same time, Microsoft (News - Alert) 365 has become the backbone of many of these organizations’ operations with its productivity, collaboration, identity, and compliance features.  But, managing its security posture consistently remains a challenge.

Datalink Networks is looking to simplify M365 security with its new Microsoft 365 Security Monitoring Program, which specifically targets this gap.  The program combines 24/7/365 monitoring with Microsoft Defender XDR, Microsoft Lighthouse, and Nessus vulnerability scanning, supported by a Security Operations Center (SOC) team that provides actionable insights.  By leveraging Microsoft’s native tools, rather than layering on expensive third-party solutions, Datalink says it reduces cost and complexity while ensuring clients maintain strong compliance postures aligned with HIPAA, FERPA, CIPA, and NIST CSF 2.0.  These are critical benefits for regulated industries.

Datalink’s program focuses on improving clients’ Microsoft Secure Scores to at least 65%, a tangible metric for measuring security maturity.  It offers monthly Nessus vulnerability scans, personalized consultations, and customized baselines for different sectors – HIPAA-aligned configurations and audit support for healthcare, FERPA/CIPA compliance and device management for schools, and cost-effective licensing optimization for SMBs.  Importantly, these services are offered under a fixed-fee model with optional add-ons like firewall support, making them more accessible to organizations with limited IT budgets or staff (which is a primary target customer for MSPs).

The importance of this program lies not just in the services offered but in its alignment with Microsoft 365’s growth trajectory.  As remote work, distance learning, telehealth, and SMB digital transformation continue to evolve, regulated industries are relying more heavily on Microsoft’s ecosystem, which, in turn, increases their risk exposure.

Datalink’s approach, backed by its Microsoft Solutions Partner for Security designation, positions it as a trusted partner for clients who need to go beyond licensing and into continuous, human-guided security monitoring.  This blend of automation and human insight addresses a critical gap:  While Defender XDR and Lighthouse provide powerful telemetry and cross-tenant visibility, it’s the SOC team that interprets alerts, prioritizes actions, and guides organizations through remediation and compliance challenges.

For Microsoft 365 customers, the program illustrates how native platform capabilities, when paired with expert oversight, can deliver enterprise-grade security without the prohibitive cost of multiple third-party tools.  It also reflects a shift in managed services from reactive alerting to proactive, compliance-focused security partnerships.  For organizations in all sectors, but especially those in regulated industries, Datalink’s program offers enhanced protection and a clearer path toward meeting complex regulatory requirements while maximizing the value of their Microsoft 365 investments.
