As MSPs’ business operations expand and more services are added, it’s super crucial to keep up with the dynamic pace of change we see today; especially when it comes to taxes and compliance regulations. (Personally, as I enjoy gamifying certain concepts, this is akin to leveling up in one’s video game of choice; you need the right gear to complete routine challenges, acquire better gear, make big numbers go up, and so on.)
For MSPs, this entails strengthening their service portfolios as they comply with modern tax requirements and other imperatives.
Notably, a pertinent concept here involves understanding the difference between acting as an “agent” versus being an “owner” for tax purposes, as this can significantly impact liabilities. Teams should also be aware of the ins and outs of federal and state regulations (like obtaining the correct licenses and filing the right forms, for example) to avoid undue penalties.
Understandably, this may seem daunting. Still, learning from others and their real-world examples — progress and pitfalls and all — can lead to the highlighting of commonly shared experiences and, ideally, proactive measures businesses can take to ensure smooth operations and build trust with aligned partners.
Fret not, you can learn plenty about this topic at the upcoming MSP Expo 2025, which is part of the #TECHSUPERSHOW experience being held from February 11-13 at the expansive Broward County Convention Center in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Specifically, one session on Wednesday, February 12 from 12:00-12:45 PM, titled “Reseller Requirements MSPs Need to Know,” will guide attendees through details including key differences between agent and owner models, implications of federal and state requirements (plus corporate compliance mandates), how to reliably manage supplier relationships and much more. That way, the expert panelists’ practical advice and cautionary tales alike can help business leaders avoid costly missteps.
Speaking about the show as a whole, MSP Expo 2025 offers a three-day experience chock-full of conference education focused on growth strategies, networking opportunities, an exhibit hall full of the latest technologies and more aimed at helping MSPs build and future-proof their business operations.
We hope we’ll see you at the show. In the meantime (and as always), take good care.
