Fortified Future: N-able's Latest Shield Against Ransomware

By Greg Tavarez

Recent research from Sophos showed an alarming trend: ransomware attackers are increasingly targeting backup systems. In fact, 94% of ransomware victims reported that their backups were compromised during an attack, making immutability more relevant than ever.

While methods like WORM locking and object storage can provide some level of immutability for traditional backups, they can be a real drag on storage costs and administrative overhead. Plus, they're not foolproof against sneaky attacks like a full system reset.

In response to the worrying trend, N-able Inc. introduced Fortified Copies from Cove Data Protection.

N-able provides IT service providers with software solutions to monitor, manage and safeguard their clients' systems, data and networks. N-able helps partners thrive at every stage of growth, protect their clients and expand their service offerings through a versatile ecosystem of integrations with industry-leading technology providers.

As for Fortified Copies, they are immutable backups that cannot be altered or deleted by threat actors because there is no way to access them via Cove’s management console, application programming interface or command line interface. Fortified Copies are automatically created hourly across all backups and devices and retained for 30 days with no manual intervention needed.

With those capabilities, the solution offers a new approach to backup immutability by automatically adding an extra layer of protection to servers, workstations and Microsoft 365 backups.

“With Fortified Copies, we’ve essentially automated backup immutability,” said Stefan Voss, vice president of product management for Cove Data Protection. “Unlike other solutions, there’s nothing to manage. You don’t need to make choices about which devices or data sources ‘deserve’ immutability or configure complex retention policies. It’s another classic example of how Cove makes MSPs’ and IT pros’ lives easier.”

N-able’s latest announcement aligns with its broader Ecoverse vision, which aims to boost IT management for MSPs. By creating a unified, open ecosystem, N-able helps MSPs to enhance resilience and capitalize on new opportunities.
