Disaster Recovery Made Simple: N-able Integrates Cove with VMware ESXi

By Greg Tavarez

Organizations must recognize the nuanced nature of disaster recovery measures in the modern information technology landscape. Traditional plans have addressed physical disruptions. However, the constant threat of cyberattacks necessitates a more distinct strategy.

Cyberattacks target specific vulnerabilities and aim to steal, corrupt or disable critical data. This demands a proactive approach that prioritizes data security, rapid incident response and system restoration from uncompromised backups. Traditional disaster recovery may focus on restoring hardware or network infrastructure, but cyber recovery plans zero in on safeguarding and restoring vital information.

This shift in focus is precisely where N-able Inc. steps in with an upgrade to its Cove Data Protection platform.

N-able fuels IT services providers with powerful software solutions to monitor, manage and secure their customers’ systems, data and networks. Built on a scalable platform, N-able offers secure infrastructure and tools to simplify complex ecosystems, as well as resources to navigate evolving IT needs.

The new Standby Image feature expands disaster recovery flexibility for MSPs and IT professionals by offering support for VMware ESXi, alongside existing options for Hyper-V and Microsoft Azure. This allows users to use Cove alongside their preferred virtualization environment to streamline disaster recovery processes and reduce costs.

By isolating backup storage by default, offering automated recovery testing and storing immutable copies in the N-able private cloud, Cove provides a multi-layered defense. The introduction of Standby Image further strengthens this commitment to business continuity.

Standby Image automates the creation, storage and maintenance of up-to-date virtual machine backups, readily deployable in a disaster scenario. This eliminates the complexity and expense associated with traditional image-based disaster recovery solutions.

N-able recognizes the evolving threat landscape, where cyberattacks require a distinct response compared to natural disasters. Cove's architecture is uniquely equipped to handle ransomware attacks. By isolating the application and primary backups, Cove will make sure they remain out of reach of malware to allow for a swift recovery at a separate location. This rapid restoration minimizes disruption and enables forensic investigation, a critical step for cybersecurity and insurance claims.

“With this latest update, Cove users can create a bootable virtual machine after every backup in their choice of multiple recovery environments, now including ESXi,” said Stefan Voss, Vice President of Product Management at N-able. “Cove helps our partners be ready for faster recovery in any type of emergency, without incurring unnecessary expenses.”

N-able's Cove Data Protection with Standby Image is set up to allow businesses to navigate both traditional and modern disaster threats and ensure operational continuity while minimizing downtime.
