Secure Ransomware Recovery with Immutable Backups

By Stefania Viscusi

In the ongoing battle against ransomware attacks, cybersecurity experts stress the importance of not only preventative measures but also last-line-of-defense data protection solutions.

While cybersecurity measures are crucial in preventing ransomware attacks, they may not suffice in eliminating the threat entirely. To ensure recoverability in the face of sophisticated attacks that breach even the strongest defenses, organizations need to adopt last-resort data protection solutions.

Nexsan, a provider of reliable and cost-effective storage solutions, underscores the necessity for businesses to implement robust data protection strategies to recover from ransomware events effectively. Company officials say features such as immutable snapshots, S3 object-locking, and unbreakable backup can help bolster defenses against ransomware threats.

“Ransomware is among the most devastating cybercriminal threats with nearly two-thirds of organizations being affected by it in 2023,” said Andy Hill, Executive Vice President of Nexsan.

“Anti-malware products are not infallible and traditional backup systems do not provide the immutability needed to keep data truly protected.”

Depending on the organization and it’s size, protection challenges can vary from data sprawl to limited resources and budget constraints. Having the right tools to safeguard business-critical information is imperative. cybersecurity software remains essential for preventing ransomware incidents but, restoring files from backups remains the most effective approach to recovering quickly from an attack.

Modern data protection solutions like immutable snapshots offer point-in-time copies of data that are locked down and cannot be altered or deleted. This ensures a reliable recovery point in case of data corruption or loss. S3 object-locking prevents the deletion or alteration of object versions for a specified period, providing an additional layer of protection against ransomware and accidental changes.

Also, Nexsan's Unbreakable Backup storage solution ensures data integrity and efficient recovery in the event of ransomware incidents.  It includes Unity and Assureon, and offers a reliable means of managing backup and unstructured data for all applications.

Deploying an immutable solution or an Unbreakable Backup with built-in security, compliance and ransomware protection offers a more robust defense to any accidental or malicious alterations. The last line of defense is your backup. Don’t let that fail you,” said Hill.
