Achievement Unlocked: MSP Expo Gold Sponsor LastPass Receives FIDO2 Server Certification

By Greg Tavarez

Need to safeguard your company’s sensitive information? Or maybe you need additional protection against unauthorized access? Simply turn to password and identity management solutions.

Unlike traditional approaches (such as paper-based records or manual password management), these solutions provide automated and centralized systems for securely storing and managing credentials. They often incorporate advanced encryption techniques to protect sensitive data, reducing the risk of unauthorized access and data breaches.

Additionally, password and identity management solutions typically offer features like single sign-on and MFA. These solutions can scale more effectively to accommodate the growing complexity and diversity of modern IT environments and provide organizations with greater flexibility and control over access policies and user permissions.

LastPass, a prominent force in password and identity management solutions, helps millions of registered users organize and protect their online lives. For more than 100,000 businesses of all sizes, MSP Expo Gold sponsor LastPass provides password and identity management solutions that are convenient, easy to manage and effortless to use.

LastPass' dedication to passwordless authentication spans multiple years. In 2022, they introduced a passwordless login experience using the LastPass Authenticator App. This momentum continued in August 2023, with the expansion of passwordless options to encompass FIDO2 authenticators, including biometric recognition like fingerprint or face ID and hardware security keys like YubiKey.

Now, as part of a big step to firmly solidify its position in the password and identity management space, LastPass has received the FIDO2 Server Certification.

The FIDO, or Fast Identity Online, Alliance — a global consortium dedicated to changing online authentication — rigorously examines and verifies adherence to its robust standards. Their meticulous certification process, conducted by trained auditors, involved a thorough review of LastPass' server infrastructure and functionalities. This inspection culminated in the official confirmation that LastPass' servers fully comply with the stringent FIDO2 specifications.

What does this achievement mean for LastPass? This achievement translates to tangible advantages for LastPass customers. Now, utilizing FIDO2 authenticators for accessing their LastPass vaults grants an extra layer of protection, one that's demonstrably secure and adheres to internationally recognized best practices.

“Meeting the FIDO2 certification standard means customers can confidently trust that LastPass provides strict and secure authentication options to access their vault, as validated and certified by the FIDO Alliance,” said Don MacLennan, Chief Product Officer at LastPass. “Our customers will realize a more simplified login experience with greater authentication choices – contributing to better password hygiene, higher adoption, less time and money wasted on resolving lockouts, and a stronger overall security posture.”

The implications of this milestone extend beyond increased individual security. For businesses leveraging LastPass' Enterprise solution, the FIDO2 Server Certification translates to enhanced protection for sensitive corporate data. By offering employees FIDO2-based access to LastPass vaults, organizations can mitigate the risks associated with compromised passwords and elevate their overall security posture.

“By eliminating the requirement for a knowledge-based credential in favor of phishing-resistant FIDO2 authenticators, LastPass has taken an important step to provide simpler and more secure access to LastPass vaults – accelerating their customers’ journey towards a password-independent future,” said Andrew Shikiar, Executive Director and CMO of the FIDO Alliance.

LastPass' achievement shows what is in store for the future of passwordless authentication. By actively shaping industry standards and implementing cutting-edge security protocols, they continue to pave the way for a safer online experience for everyone.

LastPass is a Gold sponsor of MSP Expo, taking place in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, February 13-15, 2024. Part of the #TECHSUPERSHOW, MSP Expo is the premier event for MSPs, offering a three-day experience combining conference education, networking opportunities, an exhibit hall full of the latest technologies and solutions to help MSPs build their business, and more. LastPass will be in booth #455 in the exhibit hall.
