Lumen Receives DISA Contract to Provide Secure Network Services to Department of Defense

By Greg Tavarez

Lumen Technologies is a favored partner for businesses seeking an all-encompassing suite of networking, edge cloud, collaboration and security solutions. The company's enterprise technology platform not only delivers these vital solutions, but also integrates, accelerates and safeguards applications with efficiency.

At the forefront of Lumen's offerings are their Next-Gen Apps (such as Lumen Flex, a solution that unifies network and security operations, and Lumen SASE Solutions, which ensures the security of remote workers, regardless of location or device). The company's Unified Communications and Collaboration solutions have been meticulously designed to enhance business productivity, offering seamless integration with popular platforms like Zoom, Webex, and Microsoft Teams. Additionally, Lumen's DDoS Hyper provides an effective countermeasure against network disruptions, offering both On-Demand and Always-On protection.

What sets Lumen apart, however, is its extensive fiber network, the result of mergers and acquisitions, as well as organic construction efforts. The lion's share of the company's revenue is derived from the network services provided to business customers. Lumen's strategic focus for growth revolves around compute and application services, leveraging its edge compute and threat intelligence capabilities. These services encompass SD-WAN, SASE, managed security services and edge application delivery.

Lumen Technologies continues to be trusted among various organizations, no doubt. So trusted, in fact, that Lumen won an estimated $110 million contract from the U.S. Defense Information Systems Agency to provide secure, mission-critical network services to the U.S. Department of Defense.

Through this contract, Lumen will operate and maintain DISA's fiber backbone. This entails managing an array of components, including colocation facilities, dark fiber networks and a diverse end-to-end network infrastructure. The colocation facilities provide secure and strategically located data centers for critical military and government applications, offering a secure environment for hosting and managing sensitive data and services.

Lumen is also responsible for overseeing new fiber builds and system updates that leverage innovative technologies. These updates are designed to enhance the network's resilience, decrease latency and increase availability. The incorporation of new technologies ensures that the backbone remains at the forefront of network capabilities, capable of withstanding potential disruptions and cyber threats. This not only safeguards the continuity of critical defense and communication services but also empowers these systems with the agility and efficiency required to adapt to evolving demands and emerging challenges, thereby bolstering national security and readiness.

"Lumen's robust fiber network delivers always-on, 24/7 services that power the U.S. Department of Defense," said Jason Schulman, Lumen National Vice President, Federal Sales. "DISA leverages the Lumen network's strength, diversity and resiliency to achieve its mission of connecting and protecting America's service men and women who help defend our nation."

This award is an extension of an existing network services contract DISA previously awarded to Lumen.
