Wipro Secures $44.5m Managed Services Deal with National Grid

By Luke Bellos

National Grid, a leading energy service provider based in the United Kingdom, has officially awarded a $44.5 million contract to Indian IT service company Wipro to manage company data centers and introduce hybrid cloud infrastructure.

According to a report by The Register, Wipro will focus on four primary areas of IT development for National Grid:data center colocation services, hardware managed services, mainframe service management, and migration services.  National Grid recently released literature that provided an explanation for its digital transformation strategy, which is part of a larger initiative for cutting down on carbon emissions.

In National Grid’s NGET and NGGT Digitalisation Strategy, Andi Karaboutis, Group Chief Information and Digital Officer, specified how digital transformation and managed services could play a part in the company’s effort of reducing emissions.

“Digitalisation facilitates the advancement of green technologies through increasing the volume and quality of data sharing via virtual networks, improved analytics, and the development of digital capabilities across the sector. This will become even more important as the energy sector converges with transport, telecoms and other industries, in the drive to full whole system decarbonisation.”

Karaboutis added “In addition to the key role digitalisation will play in the pathway to Net Zero, it also provides an opportunity for the energy sector to bring about cost savings for consumers, improve customer experience, enable greater whole system coordination and transparency, and accelerate the development and deployment of innovative technologies."
