Cloud Storage Price War in the Offing

Cloud Storage Price War in the Offing

By Doug Barney

There are so many companies offering storage, backup and disaster recovery in the cloud that it is hard even for MSP Today, which covers this area on a nearly daily basis, to keep up.

One thing that is clear: pricing is a key selling point for those selling to MSPs, and for MSPs then selling to clients.

Asigra is one of the protagonists in what feels like a budding price war, having changed its pricing so it is heavily skewed towards the amount of data that is recovered when there is trouble, versus just the size of the backup.

Unitrends recently announced a new provider partner program heavily aimed at margins and recurring revenues.

And this week StorageCraft is hoping to snag a few deals with a 30-percent off offer for devices supporting StorageCraft Cloud Services.

MSPs have to hurry though; the deal is only good through the end of September.

“The special discounted rate applies to all new devices activated in the StorageCraft Cloud through Sept. 30 and will be valid for the first six billing cycles. The offer is available to current StorageCraft MSP partners who want to add new devices and to MSPs who do not currently have devices in the StorageCraft Cloud,” the company said.

The backup and recovery tool is claimed to offer instant failover using the cloud (of course with so many network hops, the cloud isn’t always fast).

Clients have a few choices. They can merely archive their data or store backups as virtual machines, which store the whole environment and greatly ease recovery.

“Small or medium-sized business using the StorageCraft Recover-Ability Solution, including StorageCraft Cloud Services, in their overall business continuity plan have quick recovery of systems and data, no matter how large or small the disaster,” said Curt James, vice president of marketing and business development at StorageCraft.

Cloud Backups Put to the Test

Recently, MSP Today looked over some cloud backup test results done by MSP Remote Technology Management in conjunction with Business Solutions Magazine. StorageCraft was one of many tools tested, but it was KineticD that came out on top.

The RTM tests took over 40 hours, and included seven backup and disaster recovery (BDR) tools, Asigra, Axcient, CharTec, Datto, KineticD, StorageCraft and Unitrends. Catching testers’ attention was KineticD’s “unlimited local storage with cloud service, no bandwidth cap, no contracts and the backing up of applications, even when open,” testers said.
