XO is Taking the Cloud to a Higher Level

XO is Taking the Cloud to a Higher Level

By Rory J. Thompson

Cloud solutions seem to be everywhere these days, which is why the new offerings from Virginia-based XO Communications are a breath of fresh air.

“We’ve been building infrastructures to the service market over the past 18 months,” said Tripp O’Hara, the company’s managing director. “Our solutions can help make your company more efficient, improve business performance, attract and retain customers, and protect your most valuable data and information. They are designed by people passionate about technology and have a track record of designing innovative and award-winning services.”

It’s a big promise, but XO Communications delivers. The $1.5 billion company has approximately 90,000 customers around the globe, supported by 2,900 employees. And XO made news recently at the Cloud Expo in New York, when it rolled out an Enterprise Cloud product that ties directly to the network.

“With our new offering, customers can plug clusters into their network,” O’Hara said. “We offer private connectivity via MPLS IP VPN, and we can package the cost of the network with the computer.”

Continually innovating, XO is utilizing the cloud in a number of unique ways that are helping the company maintain its leadership.

“We’re putting file share servers onto the infrastructure platform,” O’Hara said. “We’re also launching Enterprise cloud, Cloud Vault and Cloud Drive. That last one has a slick interface and has been well received,” he added.

The company also has its eye on the future.

“We’re looking at many different things going forward, including additional security features, and the ability to connect into the cloud via other mechanisms such as private lines and wavelinks,” he said.

But like everyone else in the industry, it’s a challenge to keep up with all the rapid changes and evolutions taking place, yet XO Communications is thriving.

“We’re transitioning the mindset of the sales force,” O’Hara said. “They’ve been selling legacy telecom for 20 years, and now they have to learn something new. But we’re turning that into a positive, as we’re now also offering clients additional value in the form of education; our guys are bringing added value to the table.”

Like the company says on its website, “It’s all about delivering exceptional experience.” XO Communications is doing that, and so much more.
