The founder of Switch, Rob Roy, is a technology inventor and designer of the Switch SUPERNAPS holding 218 patented and patent-pending claims on data center systems, designs and related industry technologies. This information has to be conveyed to appreciate the meticulous detail that has gone into the new data center in Las Vegas. SUPERNAP 8 expands the world's largest and most advanced data center ecosystem providing leading companies around the world with 100 percent uptime for its clients since the company first started in 2000. As IT environments change with cloud infrastructure, companies need a reliable data center more than ever.
Everything from the Nevada desert to the grid system was intentionally selected to ensure reliability, safety and security for the SUPERNAP 8 center 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It provides colocation, connectivity, content and cloud environments to 600 of the most recognized global clients in retail, healthcare, gaming, entertainment, financial/banking, government, legal, IT, online retail and enterprise markets.
The Las Vegas desert doesn't have any natural disasters, but Mr. Roy has implemented a Switch SHIELD redundant data center roofing system. This design has two independent, separate and individually rated 200 mile-per-hour steel roof decks. Installed nine feet apart, they are attached to the concrete and steel shell of the center with zero roof penetrations.

The tri-redundant backup power is divided into three separate N +2 power systems with every cabinet having its own primary power circuit and a failover power circuit, both of which come from two completely separate N +2 power systems. This multiple redundancy system ensures the customer is always up and running even when maintenance is being performed.
If there's ever a power outage, more than 50 generators are located on-site with enough fuel for 72 hours of continuous operation. Additional fuel is delivered to ensure continuous operation as it is needed.
The Switch ROTOFLY, an invention created by Mr. Roy, delivers uninterruptible high-efficiency data center cooling even during a power outage, with a patent-pending flywheel design supporting refrigeration and temperature controls.
SUPERNAPS has:
2,200,000 square feet of Data Center space and 500,000 square feet of additional on-net office space
500 MVA of power capacity, 567 MVA of generator capacity and 294 MVA of UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply)
202,000 tons of cooling and 22,000,000 CFM (cubic feet per minute) of airflow
Over 31,000 cabinets
24/7/365 on-site security, safety, operations, and critical infrastructure personnel
“It is our mission at Switch to solve problems, develop smart systems and think beyond tomorrow for the benefit of our clients, and SUPERNAP 8 is a direct result of this mission,” said Rob Roy, CEO and Founder, Switch.
