TP-Link Introduces Omada Solution for Multi-Dwelling Units

By Greg Tavarez

TP-Link, a provider of consumer Wi-Fi products, is expanding its Omada SDN and associated product lines and is introducing the Omada private pre-shared key, PPSK, solution for multi-dwelling units.

PPSKs are unique pre-shared keys created for individual users on the same SSID. These can be used to create sub-networks within the same SSID each with a different password but able to share the same Wi-Fi network.

PPSKs will offer multi-dwelling units an easy-to-deploy authentication method for tenants. Each unit can have their own password and secure VLAN. Tenants can enjoy mesh coverage and seamless roaming throughout the entire building with a single SSID. IoT/smart home devices can be easily connected to the network without worrying about splash page compatibility. Omada can support unique VLANs for up to 4,000 units.

When I spoke with Joseph Hanna, product marketing manager at TP-Link, at ITEXPO 2022, he explained that when they are deploying PPSK’s for larger multi-dwelling units with more tenants, MSPs can choose to use an external radius server, which is usually hosted by a Wi-Fi management platform for service providers. In that way, they are able to deploy up to 4,000 PPSKs and control custom bandwidth settings for each unit and manage subscription plans. For smaller multi-dwelling units, hosting the PPSK’s on the controller can be sufficient and cut OPEX costs.

The historically underserved networking segments of small- to medium-sized businesses and multi-dwelling units, with Omada, now have access to complete remote management and top-tier performance without the hassle of buying device licenses or paying for firmware upgrades.
