The Data Deluge Means MRR for MSPs

The Data Deluge Means MRR for MSPs

By Erik Linask

Businesses rely on data.  It’s what drives their customer service, product, personnel, marketing, technology, and other business strategies.  From web analytics to network data, today’s business currency is really data.

Just why is that happening?  It’s rather simple – the volume of data that’s available is growing faster than ever.  Research suggests that, for every person, 1.7 MB of data is generated every second.  That’s 147 GB per day.  Globally, that comes to about 1.7 TB per minute.  To store all that data, we’d need almost 8 million smartphones with 256 GB of storage every day.  At that rate, it would take a month to line up those phones end to end and go all the way around the earth.

The problem is, most businesses aren’t equipped to manage all of that data, which makes much of it useless.  IT teams spend too much time managing data and supporting infrastructure, making it impossible for them to handle their other tasks, and even then, they probably aren’t able to fully optimize their data resources and aren’t even able to maximize its value.

That’s where MSPs have a massive opportunity.  Knowing the amount of data businesses generate and how ill-equipped IT teams are to manage it all, MSPs can relieve that burden by offering data protection services to ensure data is always available, optimized, and secure.  Of course, it doesn’t come without its own set of complexities for MSPs, who have to manage storage costs and their own IT infrastructure in order to manage customers’ data.  That’s where data protection comes in and can help MSPs deliver data services to their customers by improving their own data management.

  • Storage Costs – It’s one of the biggest data center costs and only grows when data isn’t managed well.  De-duplication of data can reduce storage requirements significantly, while also making data easier to access.
  • IT Complexity –  Too often, IT teams have implemented a variety of disparate tools over the years to manage and monitor both physical and virtual servers, applications, and data storage.  By consolidating to a single, holistic data protection solution, MSPs can reduce their own IT complexity and focus more on ensuring data availability and performance for customers.
  • Data Center Optimization – Multi- and hybrid cloud environments have also added IT complexity and make it hard to maximize their value.  The right data protection software, though, can cut through the mix of IT systems, applications, hypervisors, and cloud resources to optimize them and reduce waste, while increasing performance.

Ultimately, MSPs ability to deliver data services relies on their data center tools to maximize value – and profit.  As they are entrusted with more and more customer data, MSPs need the tools to manage it efficiently.

But, as data volumes continue to increase and as more and more businesses look to MSPs for data services, more and more MSPs will enter the space, increasing competition.  To differentiate and ensure service delivery, MSPs must invest in the right tools, so they can spend less time on their own IT and more time resources to attracting on managing new customers to drive their own recurring revenue streams.

To learn more about data protection and how the right solution can help take your MSP Data Protection services to the next level, join Quest Software’s Bennett Klein and Scott Hetrick for a conversation about data management.  They will be hosting a session on Thursday, February 4, 2021 at 2:00pm EST, called “Boost the Profitability of Your Data Protection MSP Services,” during which they will be discussing how MSPs can:

  • Increase margins for higher profitability
  • Optimize data center resources to get more from your budget
  • Slash data storage resource requirements and costs
  • Simplify and automate data center operations and management
If you’re in the data business – and as an MSP, you should be – don’t miss this session to make sure you have the tools to capitalize on the value of data.
