Wheelings & Dealings: Acuative Acquires Thrupoint, Looks to Bolster IT Support Presence

By Steve Anderson

Acuative is known throughout the world as a provider of both network support and IT support services, and to that end has acquired the U.S division of Thrupoint, Inc., with plans down the line to pick up Thrupoint's U.K and Middle East divisions as well. Considering Thrupoint's own presence in the market, the reasoning behind such an acquisition becomes quite clear.

Thrupoint offers a line of consulting and professional services related to both networks and IT in general, and boasts over 100 employees, with offices in both New York and Virginia along with the aforementioned overseas divisions. More specifically, Thrupoint commonly works in developing networks and IT strategy from the ground up, complete architectures and roadmaps geared toward getting clients in a position to manage unified communications (UC) systems, as well as data center operations, data storage systems, and security for these systems. Thrupoint can work in both the short and the long term to produce solutions that meet the needs of clients on several fronts of IT.

As a result of the acquisition, at last report, Thrupoint's operations will be conducted under the Acuative brand, and added to Acuative's already impressive lineup of operations. Acuative itself, meanwhile, has been in operation since 1984, and offers a variety of technology solutions of its own to several different markets, offering its services in voice and data managed services, data centers, unified communications, and several other fields. The combination of Thrupoint and Acuative, meanwhile, suggests a critical point, and makes the resulting combination look like a very bright idea.

Acuative's services look mainly to provide support for solutions that are already in place. Thrupoint, meanwhile, looks to offer support for solutions that are really just getting started. If Acuative picked up Thrupoint to augment its operations in early-stage systems, it could be that Acuative was looking to round out its offerings overall, and be able to be the vendor of choice for all stages of a technology process. Where before, companies might have turned to Thrupoint to design a system and then turned to Acuative to augment it later, now companies can turn strictly to Acuative for the entire process. That makes the supply chain simpler overall, and potentially, one that will be dominated by Acuative. What's more, we're seeing increased changes overall in the way IT is supplied and managed. Things like the bring your own device (BYOD) movement are taking the focus off company-owned devices and instead putting it on company-owned networks and information. There's always a need for hardware, of course, but with more end users responsible for endpoints, the hardware demand shifts toward that which manages a network or a data center. That's another critical point Acuative could be working toward: the design and implementation of such systems in the face of clear change in the market.

Simplifying a supply chain is a noble goal for any business, and given the overall thrust for IT in businesses, Acuative may well have made quite a step here. Only time will tell until Acuative's true purposes in acquiring Thrupoint become clear, but it's a safe bet that this was a smart move in the long run.
