Colocation, cloud computing provider and MSP Expedient has completed a $3 million expansion project, adding space and resources to its data center in Pittsburgh. The project tacked on 7,000-square-feet of raised floor space at the company’s facility at Allegheny Center Mall (ACM).
The additional space brings the data center’s footprint to more than 17,000 square feet and Expedient also uses an additional 20,000 square feet at the facility for backup power and HVAC infrastructure as well as an operations support center and central offices. When combined with the company’s data center in Greentree, Expedient’s Pittsburgh data center footprint is now more than 60,000 square feet.
The MSP also has seven additional facilities located in the Midwest, Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions, connected through a 10 Gbps fiber network. The company plans three additional data center expansions this year, which will bring its total capacity to more than 250,000 square feet.
"Our solutions are unique in that we effectively offer customers one giant data center, at nine, soon to be 11 different sites, which are seamlessly connected by a fully redundant 10Gig fiber ring,” said Shawn McGorry, president of Expedient. “This is especially appealing to clients seeking geographic diversity to help meet their security and disaster requirements."
MSP and colocation provider OneNeck IT also announced an expansion of its Minnesota data center today in a $12-milion project that will bring the facility to 18,000 square feet. Data center providers are scrambling to build out their facilities and add value by installing heightened safety and security measures. The tremendous uptake in cloud services as well as customers’ demands for more scalable, rigorous and cost effective solutions have led providers to build out larger facilities with careful management of energy consumption and other costly resources.
Expedient’s upcoming plans include a study to build a third facility in the Cleveland area, adding 10,000-square-feet of production-ready, raised floor space. The project would cost in the neighborhood of $7 million with plans to be completed by the end of the year. Also on tap is engineering for a second Columbus facility adding 20,000 square feet of space, which would also be an investment of around $7 million. Other upcoming projects including the addition of more than 6,000 square feet in Indianapolis, which will bring that facility to more than 25,000 square feet.
