The new version of OnApp’s infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) platform, geared toward MSPs, hosting companies and telcos, is now generally available. OnApp v3.1 is being provided as a free upgrade for existing customers, and includes a number of new features like support for bare metal and Smart Servers.
The OnApp IaaS platform brings together a variety of IaaS capabilities in one platform, enabling major efficiencies for service providers. Customers can use their entire infrastructure, including cloud, dedicated servers, VPS, global CDN, DNS, storage, load balancers, autoscaling, templates and other IaaS capabilities, as one pool of resources to be provisioned at will.
The resulting efficiencies can accommodate a wide range of customer workloads and save time and money for MSPs and cloud providers. The newly added support for Smart Servers provides cloud automation with the performance levels of dedicated hardware. The latest version of the platform also provides support for Recipes and Blueprints, offering two new ways for service providers to automate the deployment and customization of servers, applications and complete application stacks.

Bringing dedicated servers into this environment, and extending cloud automation to other types of infrastructure, is the next logical step.”IaaS comprises the fastest-growing segment of the cloud computing market, according to Gartner, and service providers are increasingly linking up with market leader Amazon Web Services (AWS) as well as other IaaS players like Microsoft and Google. Ubiquity Servers chose the OnApp platform back in June to launch its public cloud in an attempt to offer an AWS alternative, while companies like Big Brain Global and Cartika are using the platform to roll out a variety of cloud services.
The latest version of OnApp also features location groups, enabling MSPs and other providers to manage CDN edge servers in multiple locations via a single control panel. Additional features include new failover algorithms, new billing tools including template and bucket zones and an HTML5-based console.
