SDN on the Cheap

SDN on the Cheap

By Doug Barney

Software Defined Networking (SDN) is a complex and ambitious technology that replaces physical and hard wired network connections with a full layer of virtualization. Sounds expensive? Two-year-old Startup Pertino says it doesn’t have to be, provided you use the cloud. Aimed at small shops, the new Pertino system costs less than $30 a month for 10 devices – at least that’s the entry price.

Instead of these small companies building their own wide area networks or virtual private networks (VPN), Pertino does it all in the cloud. Stealing a page from the Apple playbook, Pertino also has an apps store – AppScape -- where SMBs can buy and set up third party services. The shelves aren’t packed quite yet, but customers can buy GeoView, a network mapping service that works in real time. Other tools on the way will focus on performance optimization, network visibility and security.

On the old days of networking, the devices were largely servers (including mainframe and mid-range computers), arrays and PCs. Now we have to worry about mobile devices. Here Pertino can manage Android clients the same way it handles PCs and Macs.

Enterprise Strategy Group (News - Alert) was briefed on the plan and seems to like what it sees. “With the emergence of SDN-powered cloud networking and network function virtualization, we expect that traditional appliance and endpoint services, such as security, virtualization, and deep packet inspection functions, will start to be virtualized and migrated to a cloud services model,” said Bob Laliberte, senior analyst at Enterprise Strategy Group.

Pertino, like its apps store inspiration Apple, is based in Cupertino and was started to use the cloud to change the way networking is done. “The team set out to combine their expertise with emerging software-defined networking and advanced technologies pioneered by mega-cloud providers like Google and Netflix,” the company said.

So where did the name Pertino come from? It is the 7 letters of the word Cupertino.

Earlier this year the company announced its latest round of funding, the company pulled in $20 million which it added to the $8.85 million it already had in its coffers.

During the SDN pre-conference at ITEXPO Las Vegas, attendees will get a closer look at the technologies and components involved in SDN as well as hear use cases of SDN, the players involved in moving SDN forward, and what this all means for networking as we know it.
