Virtustream and Intel Partner on Managed Service for Big Data Analytics

By Laura Stotler

A new big data analytics managed services partnership has been announced. Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) provider Virtustream has teamed up with Intel to offer the HANA-Hadoop Managed Service for big data analytics.

Virtustream will use the Intel Distribution for Apache Hadoop (IDH) with their xStream cloud managed software and HANA Managed Service. The combined offering will let customers analyze large data sets in the cloud at high speeds.

The SAP HANA component of the solution provides an in-memory database, enabling accelerated reporting and big data analytics. The Hadoop service lets users process large sets of unstructured data. By combining the two offerings with the Virtustream SAP HANA-certified cloud, customers may benefit from scalability as well as a consumption-based pricing model.

Research and Markets predicts the market for big data-driven telecom analytics will grow at a CAGR of close to 50 percent between next year and 2019. The company forecasts the market at $5.4 billion by the end of that period. Global spending on big data solutions is also expected to grow at a CAGR of 48 percent in that time period, creating a burgeoning market for solutions like the Virtustream/Intel offering.

"Users will be able to run predictive analytics and generate real-time analytics on large data sets, including business data, social media and point of sale data, in the cloud - while ensuring the environment is secure, compliant, efficient and flexible," said Boyd Davis, vice president and general manager of the Datacenter Software Division at Intel, on the new offering.

"Both HANA and Hadoop offer extremely valuable toolsets for enterprises, and Virtustream's xStream cloud software is able to further enhance the technologies by providing a secure environment for the solutions to run at a significantly faster rate," said Michael Hoch, senior vice president of Cloud Advisory Services at Virtustream. "Collaborating with Intel to develop the HANA-Hadoop solution expands our capabilities in the big data market, as we continue to provide enterprises with the mission-critical and production solutions they need to meet today's business demands."

Additional benefits of the new solution include easy setup for customers, with no CapEx requirement necessary. Clients also gain access to HANA and Hadoop database engineers who can work with them to deploy a solution in weeks instead of the typical months required.
