StorageCraft Continues Backup Storage Pricing Onslaught

StorageCraft Continues Backup Storage Pricing Onslaught

By Doug Barney

In case you haven’t noticed, there is a bit of a pricing war raging in the online backup market. The space is flush with existing players, and new entrants are joining the fight with remarkable regularity.

One company trying to attract MSPs is StorageCraft which has been offering a 30 percent discount for a short term. That short term is now extended by a month, and the offer is now good through the end of October.

The savings apply to new devices that tap into StorageCraft Cloud Services, and once these devices are activated, the discounts are good for the next six bills.

New partners as well as existing MSP partners both qualify for the deal.

Here's what service providers and customers get with StorageCraft Cloud Services, the company said: “Instant virtualization of backup images in the cloud; file-and-folder access of data for smaller disasters; personal control of customer backups for fast recoveries; high encryption and facility security standards.”

New and Cheaper Pricing Abounds

Cloud backup has traditionally been on a per GB basis. While much of the backup price war has been over per backup volume pricing, Asigra turned that whole thing on its head by moving to pricing based on how much data gets restored.

The move was countered by MSP vendor Zenith Infotech with a new approach that is also not based on per GB backup pricing. Zenith Infotech just so happens to use StorageCraft to drive its backup services.

“Service providers are constantly evaluating the advantages and challenges of onsite devices vs. cloud services, particularly in backup and disaster recovery,” explained Zenith CEO Akash Saraf recently. “Zenith DRaaS provides a hybrid approach. But where we're really changing the game is with the cloud portion. We charge one price for an offsite vault with expandable shared storage to dramatically lower a partner's costs. The era of per-GB pricing is at an end at Zenith.”

The whole idea is to have affordable monthly fees for the on-premises storage devices. MSPs and other partners also contract with Zenith to rent a BDR-G14 Vault that is hosted by Zenith and which can copy that data to more than two dozen local devices. This price is the same no matter whether the MSP replicates to one or 25 local appliances. And this means that the price doesn’t go up as more data is stored. “Offsite storage rates seem low on paper. But as GBs turn into TBs, the cost snowballs. With stable Vault pricing, our partners can increase their revenues without increasing their expenses,” Saraf argued.

VaultLogix Unlocks Savings

VaultLogix is also pitching price, running a price chopping incentive plan from now till the end of the year for its cloud backup that is aimed at resellers and SMBs.

The company todays counts 600 MSPs, VARs and IT consultants as partners, and there is apparently always room for more.

The program, Cash for Clients, awards partners for adding billable clients that use VaultLogix active vaults. “Monetary rewards will be based on the number of billable clients added to the VaultLogix active vaults on a calendar month basis. Each client added must be initially billable for a minimum of 60 days and 10 gigabytes (GB) of stored data,” the company said.
