NSFOCUS Introduces Managed Security Service to the North American Market

By Michael Guta

As the name implies, a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack causes a denial of service for users of a system that has been targeted. Individuals or different rogue organizations and governments initiating the attack exploit vulnerabilities in computers around the world by creating master and control machines to launch the attack against their target. Whether it is a network-centric or an application-layer attack, a massive amount of messages is delivered to flood the targeted system, forcing it to shut down. NSFOCUS, a global provider of DDoS mitigation, solutions and services, has introduced a Managed Security Service (MSS) for the North American market for Web hosting providers and data centers.

The company's MSS is designed to work in tandem with its carrier-grade Anti-DDoS (ADS) system by providing Web hosting service providers and high-capacity data centers with the tools they need to protect the assets of their customers. It combines hardware and software with enterprise-grade DDoS monitored through NSFOCUS' cloud-based network security operations centers throughout the world.

Web hosting service providers and data centers used for colocation services housing the primary and backup systems of organizations around the world have to ensure they have a deeper level of DDoS support. With increased and sophisticated DDoS attacks, the security mechanism put in place has to implement a multilayer technology that is able to process legitimate users, while isolating those that are suspect.

The attacks being launched today are more focused thereby creating more destruction when they achieve their goal. Distinguishing legitimate requests against those that are disguised to appear legitimate is getting more difficult because of the level of sophistication used in these attacks

NSFOCUS provides an advanced system architecture, intuitive and centralized management, flexible scalability and multilevel DDoS prevention mechanism with a series of algorithms to detect and prevent malicious attacks accurately with integrated filtering modules that include:

  • Anti-Spoofing
  • Protocol Analysis
  • Customized Application Analysis
  • User Behavior Analysis
  • Dynamic Fingerprinting
  • Rate Limiting

This filtering mechanism is able to detect, identify and mitigate large attacks.

"MSS can evaluate and determine, based on proprietary algorithms, whether or not a site visitor is a human or a malicious botnet. But that is only the beginning. The one-two punch of flexible, battle-tested, on-premise technology and around-the-clock access to a DDoS security expert makes MSS a true business partner for keeping website uptime high, maintaining customer satisfaction and generating additional revenue," said Frank Ip, vice president of U.S. operations for NSFOCUS.
