Hughes Flicks HughesON, New Managed Services Aimed at Enterprise, Government Markets

By Doug Barney

Hughes Network Systems, LLC is a monster in the broadband market, and holds the number one position in using satellites to provide high-speed Internet. But Hughes is also in the managed services game, and recently launched a whole new line – HughesON.

Hughes is aiming HughesON at federal and state governments, retailers, finance, and restaurant and hospitality.

"Organizations cannot afford to have their networks slow down their operations," said Mike Cook, senior vice president, North American Division at Hughes. "Today's IT managers are dealing with challenges ranging from new cloud and mobile initiatives, to customer Wi-Fi and rich-media signage and training applications. These applications require more bandwidth and higher performance than typical networks can provide, as well as higher reliability and more security options. HughesON meets these needs with next generation network solutions that deliver multi-branch applications at a better price/performance ratio than traditional solutions."

Hughes believes it has a smarter, less expensive way to book network performance. One common approach is for IT or a service provider to put WAN optimization gear in company locations. While this may be effective for a large centralized organization, it doesn’t scale for companies with many locations.

Hughes says it has invented a way to add performance optimization to its customer premises equipment (CPE), negating the need for dedicated WAN optimization. “HughesON Performance Optimization technologies actively monitor in real-time the network variability of the underlying broadband network and customer traffic to ensure higher application performance. As a result, HughesON transforms ‘best-efforts’ broadband into a cost-effective, enterprise-class Wide-Area Network (WAN) capable of speeds up to 12 Mbps with true end-to-end Quality of Service (QoS),” the company explained.

Hughes’ performance techniques include QoS, bonding of multiple links into higher performance connections and data compression to make better use of available bandwidth.

"Our next-generation HughesON solutions with built-in performance optimization technologies represent a new and innovative approach to the multi-branch market -- an approach no other service or technology provider can match. Now, IT managers can break free from their constrained networks and use HughesON to power their organizations and meet their objectives," said Hughes’ Cook.
