Managed Vaulting for NetApp Service from SunGard Enables Cost-Effective Data Storage, Recovery

By Laura Stotler

A new managed service from SunGard Availability Services has been announced to enable end-to-end protection for customers using NetApp storage. The Managed Vaulting for NetApp service is designed for customers using NetApp storage in their primary data center environments, and is available as part of the SunGard Availability Services (AS) Recovery Services portfolio.

The new SunGard managed service utilizes NetApp's SnapMirror or SnapVault technology to replicate data in real time to the NetApp infrastructure within SunGard AS' secure recovery environment. This lets organizations protect their critical data within NetApp storage systems, where it is vaulted in a trusted, offsite location and also available as needed for disaster recovery.

Managed Vaulting for NetApp features everything needed for the capture, replication and storage of data in an offsite vault. It is delivered as a fully managed, online backup service and offers a variety of features, including assured data preservation, since data is captured locally and moved to offsite vaults for preservation and recovery.

The service also offers a low cost of storage via offsite vaults for archiving and retention of older data, which frees up local storage resources.

Additional benefits of the new managed service include an improved recovery point, since organizations can eliminate traditional tape-based backup and recovery systems with disk-based and replication technologies. The burden on IT departments is also decreased, as the remote management of protection and replication processes is enabled.

"The SunGard Availability Services Managed Vaulting service provides fast and simple backup and recovery, tapping SunGard Availability Services recovery expertise and maximizing our existing NetApp storage investment," said Alexandre Page-Relo, chief information officer, Remy Cointreau USA, Inc. "It allows us to safeguard our data quickly and cost-effectively with a managed service model that allows us to turn CAPEX into OPEX, and frees both internal IT and infrastructure resources."

Overall, the solution provides a lower capital expenditure on dedicated secondary storage, recovery site and management costs.

"Too many organizations – especially ones that take a do-it-yourself approach – find restoration of business applications too difficult, unpredictable and costly," said Michael de la Torre, vice president, product management, SunGard Availability Services. "SunGard Availability Services' Managed Vaulting for NetApp addresses these challenges with a fully managed solution that extends beyond data protection to include application recovery while providing coherent capture, replication and retention of NetApp-stored data."
