The legions of NetApp customers have a new way to gain end-to-end protection for their data. SungGard Availability Services this week unveiled the Managed Vaulting for NetApp service.
The service is aimed at those shops who use NetApp in their data centers. By using NetApp’s SnapVault or SnapMirror tools, data can be replicated in SunGard’s environment, which contains NetApp infrastructure. The data is now backed up SunGard’s offsite data center facilities and handled by a full managed service that captures, replicates and the stores the information in a form that makes it easy to restore.
One customer is already using the service; "The SunGard Availability Services Managed Vaulting service provides fast and simple backup and recovery, tapping SunGard Availability Services recovery expertise and maximizing our existing NetApp storage investment," said Alexandre Page-Relo, chief information officer, Remy Cointreau USA, Inc. "It allows us to safeguard our data quickly and cost-effectively with a managed service model that allows us to turn CAPEX into OPEX, and frees both internal IT and infrastructure resources."
SunGard claims several benefits for the program as well. Since IT is replicating data to a service provider, the enterprise doesn’t have to manage that extra tier of storage.
By using the offsite storage tier, the NetApp gear that remains in the enterprise can enjoy a longer life span since it is less taxed by holding older data.
By replacing tape and other backup technologies with a service, and using snapshots, enterprises should enjoy a faster recovery time.
Enterprises may save money by not incurring the capital expense of the on-premises backup hardware and software.
And as with all managed services, the new SunGard service reduces the burden on IT to manage its backup infrastructure.

SunGard is in three other businesses besides availability services. It has software to support financial systems, solutions for the K-12 market, and public sector offerings.
