Pacnet to Invest in New Facility - An Advanced Data Center in Singapore

By Shankar Pandiath

Pacnet, an integrated network and technology solutions provider in Asia Pacific, will be investing about $90 million in Singapore to build a new Tier III data center.

Pacnet needed a base from where it could offer its managed services to customers. There has been a growing demand for an advanced data center for managed services.

The investment in Singapore comes as a point of strategic initiatives undertaken by Pacnet to leverage its network assets spread across Asia to serve all its Carrier and Enterprise customers. Pacnet aims to focus on data centers dealing with managed services.

According to Frost & Sullivan, the Singapore data service center market is showing robust signs and is expected to touch about $550 million by 2017, nearly doubling from $223 million in 2010. The compound annual growth rate of the segment at 13.8 percent is very impressive and is attracting interest.

Jim Fagan, president of Managed Services at Pacnet, said that Singapore has an insatiable appetite for data center services, and it is not surprising because it is one of the world's most dynamic economic and financial hubs.

However, supply has struggled to keep up to this demand. He mentioned that the new facility will not only provide customers with data center and connectivity services in Singapore, but also gives them access to Pacnet's broad portfolio of managed services, allowing them to interconnect their data requirements throughout Asia.

Pacnet’s new eight-storey standalone facility in Singapore will be ready for completion in the fourth quarter of 2013. The 157,000 square foot building is strategically located in the Paya Lebar area and will be meeting Tier III data center standards, and also complying with BCA Green Mark certification standards.

This new Pacnet’s date center will be able to support 500 high power density racks with an initial load of six megawatt. It is designed for high-power density needs to support customer requirements. It will have the supply of 12 MVA utility connections, which can be upgraded up to 15 MVA. Pacnet’s high speed network currently connects over 300,000 square feet of data center space across 16 cities.

Pacnet’s Singapore facility would be connected directly to submarine cable networks that are fully owned by Pacnet.
