Baynetwork Goes from Old Gear to New IT Managed Services

When old timers hear of Baynetwork, Inc. they may think of Bay Networks, a former networking juggernaut formed by the merger of Wellfleet Communications and Synoptics Communications back in the 1990s, only to be sold off to Nortel – which itself has been in bankruptcy since 2009.

But this Baynetwork is different. This Baynetwork began in 1997 as a reseller of refurbished network gear, mostly from Juniper, Cisco Foundry and Extreme.

This Silicon Valley-based company is now leveraging those hardware connections and hoping to sell managed IT services right in its backyard.

Customers are apparently telling Baynetwork that they need more post-sales support. That’s the impetus behind the new offshoot found at www.itservices101.com. This set of onsite and remote services is aimed both at existing customers, as well as Silicon Valley startups and other Valley companies.

Services include e-mail and collaboration, managed security, replication and storage, applications, and network services.

The company believes its timing is good, as many shops are bogged down by fundamental market shifts such as the cloud. “While ‘the cloud’ is being adopted, businesses sometimes need just a little help fast, redundant and secure connections to the cloud are critical to operations and we have the equipment sales and technical knowledge to ensure IT operations stay running smoothly at a non-contractual minimal cost,” said George Petushkov, Managing Director for Baynetwork.

Many of these services are extensions of things the company already does for customers, such as analyzing security, designing networks, troubleshooting and repair, asset recovery.

The company plans to stay local. In fact it calls its services hyper-local and aims them exclusively at the Valley and San Francisco areas.

Services fall into two areas. Network Security services include anti-virus protection, system updates, as well as deployment and administration.

On the Managed IT Services side, offerings include monitoring and remote support, network engineering, BYOD support and network management.

A Local Advantage?

Today, many outsourced IT services are by large national or global companies. Clearly these companies have manpower, resources and experience. But in some cases, local is better.

With the cloud and ubiquitous communications, many tasks can be handled remotely, such as monitoring, managing, troubleshooting and in some cases fixing your gear, especially in the event of software failures.

Other times you really need a technician onsite. Not only can you see the work get done (and not let the tech leave till it is), but you have the advantage of a closer, personal relationship with the provider. And with local providers, a real person should be easier to reach in the event of trouble.

That’s the notion of having an actual neck to wring when your operating fails to run smoothly.

Local managed services are especially attractive to smaller businesses which don’t have the expertise to walk through problems over the phone, and are used to doing business on a one-on-one basis.
