St. John's Prep School Deploys TwinStrata Cloud-Based Backup and Recovery Solution

By Laura Stotler

St. John's Prep School out of Danvers, Mass. has deployed a cloud-based backup and recovery strategy from TwinStrata, Inc. The school is using the TwinStrata CloudArray solution to integrate cloud storage into the school's networking environment.

The TwinStrata solution presents as an iSCSI device within the school's backup software, which is currently Symantec Backup Exec. This enables a simple backup process compared to the disk-to-disk-to-tape backups the school had previously performed, which offered limited offsite protection.

The cloud provides an ideal solution for St. John's, including offsite data protection as well as streamlining of the backup process. TwinStrata's offering enables specific instances to be deployed in cloud compute environments, offering a simple and easy disaster recovery solution.

TwinStrata CloudArray also offers access to Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3), featuring simple and cost-effective provisioning. The school is using an eight-terabyte cloud-based volume, but is only required to pay for the four terabytes that are actually being used. As school data volumes grow, the additional capacity is available for easy scalability.

"We have a small team here at the school, and we needed a solution that wouldn't take too much work to either set up or to maintain," said Christopher Butler, director of information services at St. John's Prep. "We looked into offsite tape storage as an extension of our previous backup strategy, but we were concerned about how long it would take to recover our data in the event of a disaster. TwinStrata was the perfect solution – set, forget and recover in the cloud if disaster strikes."

"St. John's Prep is a lot like many of our other customers – organizations with a small, but effective team, looking to manage their storage needs smarter, better and more efficiently," said Nicos Vekiarides , CEO of TwinStrata. "For these companies, cloud storage gives them back time, resources and peace of mind."
