Ciena Providing 100G Optical Technology to MSP Partner Comcast

Ciena Corp (News - Alert). is providing next generation 100G coherent optical technology to Comcast Cable, its managed service provider (MSP) partner, for use in its core network. The deployment is designed to help Comcast (News - Alert) satisfy increasing customer demand for high-speed and high-capacity services and applications with offerings that include HD video, mobile data and cloud computing.

Additionally, the Ciena deployment will help the MSP expand and evolve its network as well as create energy efficiencies. Energy savings are achieved by reducing the number of network components required to offer managed services, like optical regenerators. Ciena's 6500 Packet-Optica Platform provides third-generation WaveLogic coherent optical line interfaces. This gives MSPs like Comcast a scalable means to enhance their networks while also supporting broadband growth.

"Adding Ciena's WaveLogic 3 to our already installed 6500 Packet-Optical Platforms lets us leverage that investment to deliver more content, faster Internet speeds and enable new cloud-based applications for our customers, while also providing future core 400G scalability," said Kevin McElearney, senior vice president, Network Engineering, at Comcast Cable in a statement. "As we scale beyond our 100G network, Ciena's coherent optical technology will help us to deliver on our ongoing commitment to maintain and operate a high-performance, feature-rich advanced network."

The optical line interfaces offer a software-programmable, coherent technology that may be scaled to 400G. The technology comprises a critical component of Ciena's OPn architecture, which offers MSPs signal regeneration capabilities and is programmable for capacity, reach and latency.

As part of the BizConnect program, Ciena is also providing Comcast with network management system capabilities and professional services through the Ciena Specialist Services portfolio, which includes furnishing and installation. The two companies have a long-standing relationship, with 40G and 100G technologies from Ciena being deployed by Comcast since 2009.

"Service providers are continuously looking for new ways to meet the needs of their customers while extracting the most value out of their vast network infrastructures," said Francois Locoh-Donou, senior vice president, Global Products Group at Ciena. "Through a combination of consultative customer engagements based on network analytics and transformational planning, along with state-of-the-art 100G technology, we are able to help customers like Comcast transform network infrastructure so that they can meet escalating bandwidth and service demands."
